Google for India 2017: Android Oreo bill payments through Tez app and other announcements
Tech giant Google conducted the third edition of their “Google for India” event in New Delhi.
As a stripped down version of its latest Android platform, the new Go edition brings a set of light and optimised apps such as Google Go, Google Assistant Go, YouTube Go, Google Maps Go, Gmail Go and Files Go, which is a way to manage and share files. Apart from this, Google also announced an update for Maps, Google Assistant for JioPhone, and bill payment feature coming to Tez.
Over 330 million users in India access Internet on smartphones
Out of 400 million internet users in India, over 330 million people access Internet on smartphones, said Rajan Anandan, Google’s VP of Southeast Asia and MD of India. Anandan also shared that in the last 15 months or so, 4G speeds in India have drastically improved and affordable mobile data plans have played a big role. Anandan said an average connected user in India consumes around 4GB of 4G data, but that figure might go up to 11GB in the next four years.
1: Android Oreo (Go edition)
Android Go was first announced during Google’s developers conference earlier this year. Android Go — a lightweight version of Android mobile operating system designed for low-end smartphones. Now, Google has renamed Android Go as Android Oreo (Go Edition). It is launching today with Android 8.1. The company says the first devices from partners will launch in the market in the next few months.
2: Google Assistant Arrives on Reliance JioPhone
Although the JioPhone is feature phone rather than a smartphone, Google has somehow managed to bring their hugely successful Google Assistant to the device, making sure that you can access it without having to pay thousands on a full-fledged Android device. This also makes JioPhone the world’s first feature phone to support Google Assistant.
3: Google Tez app
Google Tez app gets 12 million users in 10 months; bill payments feature also announced
Google Tez is a rapidly growing mobile payment service in India with 12 million user mark in the next couple of days. Sengupta revealed that the app has crossed 140 million transactions since launch, which is 4x growth compared to the average transaction size in the country.Starting today, users will be able to pay bills for utility providers like Airtel, ACT, DishTV and a lot more.
4: Google Go
In a move to deliver a unified Google experience to consumers using low-end handsets, the search giant has introduced Google Go, which is the rebranding of the Search Lite app. This provides access to Google’s vast services such as YouTube, Search, Maps and a lot more without consuming a lot of your phone’s memory.
5: Files Go
The new Files Go app is designed to free up space on phones with storage as low as 4GB. The app provides suggestions to users on files that should be deleted to free up space.
It also lets you find and share files with nearby users completely offline, which is quite impressive to say the least.

Google Maps gets motorcycles navigation mode in India and the company has unveiled a new feature for Google Maps in the country. India is one of the first countries to get ‘two-wheeler mode’ in Google Maps.
