What is Food Combining?

Food combining is the idea that eating certain type of foods together and keeping certain foods separate will help you digest food better and will also help you absorb nutrients effectively. When considering food combining, there are a few different categories of foods: proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Carbohydrates are further broken down into fruits and starches.

Some food combining plans break these down even further: sweet and starches can be grains, or fruits can be acid, sub-acid starchy vegetables, or non-starchy vegetables. Some plans don’t include fat as a separate food, but include it with proteins.

  • Eggs and banana

A lot of people have been misinformed by a rumour that says the combination of egg and banana in the stomach can turn into poison and result in death.

This belief was perpetuated because of an Internet hoax that originated from India.

The rumour claims that a young man died after eating egg and banana together and the food reacted with the acid in the stomach, which then created poison in the stomach. The fake story is still making its round on social media until today.

There is no scientific study that suggests banana when eaten together with eggs would form anything toxic.

Nevertheless, keep in mind the safe steps in food handling and cooking, especially for eggs because uncooked or raw eggs have a risk of producing Salmonella, a type of bacteria which can increase the risk of food poisoning.

  • Banana And Milk

There are very few people on earth who don’t like banana milkshake. But this also makes for a dangerous food combination, as it sits heavy in your stomach. Try to avoid this combination; if you cannot resist a milkshake, add a pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon to stimulate your digestive system.

  • Fruit after a full meal

We have all, at some point had a fruit instead of that heavy chocolate cake, in our attempt to be healthy. This is a bad idea when you’re on a full stomach. Eating fruit after a meal doesn’t combine well with other foods since it requires no digestion and causes the other food to stay in the stomach for a long time.

  • Burger and Fries

Yes, those fries we order to go with our burger without even thinking. The trans fats in both these food items (since the burger patty and chips are both deep fried) will lower your blood sugar levels  and more often than not, cause you to feel tired and sleepy.

  • Pizza and Soda

Something a lot of us are guilty of. Most of us can’t eat pizza without a fizzy drink. The carbs in the pizza along with proteins and starch take up a lot of your body’s energy for digestion. In addition to this, the sugar in the soda slows down digestion and other stomach processes.

  • Olive oil and Nuts

This combination can make you sick because the protein in nuts and the fat in olive oil do not mix. Thus, the raw fat being digested prevents the protein from being digested.

  • Tomatoes in Pasta

Hell yes! Who knew this staple meal for a lot of people was not good for the body. Pasta is rich in starchy carbs and difficult to digest. The tomatoes which are highly acidic cause hindrance in the digestion of starch and cause bloating.

  • Meat and Potatoes

There are a lot of us who like to eat meat with mashed or grilled potatoes. These two foods, together can create some digestive problems. The lack of fiber can cause stomach problems.

  • Carbs And Animal Protein

When you eat a carbohydrate with protein (such as meat with potatoes or bread) they counteract- protein putrefies and carbohydrate ferments. This leads to gas, bloating and flatulence. Those who have eaten this combination for years may have developed immunity, but it is better to eat complementary combinations like beans and rice which is a good combination.

  • Two High Proteins

Surf and turf, bacon and eggs- these are all popular combinations containing two high protein sources. This taxes the digestive system and takes a long time to digest. To avoid this, eat your meals in courses- keeping light proteins first and meat later and never wait more than 10 minutes between each course.

  • Food And Water/Juice

Drinking water or juice with your meal is one of the most toxic food combinations. Water dilutes your stomach acids and reduces their effectiveness in breaking down proteins, carbohydrates and fats. So drink water 10 minutes before the meal. This’ll keep you from overeating or diluting stomach enzymes.

  • Cereal With Milk And Orange Juice

Milk contains casein, and orange juice contains acid. Together, they curdle the dairy and also destroy the enzyme present in the starchy cereal. To avoid this, have fruit juice at least an hour before or after the cereals.

  • Cheese And Meat

Cheesy meatballs, meat in fondue, cheese and meat omelet- these all are very high in protein content. Naturally, it is very difficult to digest. So instead, stick to chopped vegetables in fondue, avoid cheese in meatballs and cut down the meat in omelet.
