Airtel may be launching at Rs 2,500 4G smartphone before Diwali
India’s largest telecom operator Bharti Airtel launching 4G smartphone for a price as low as Rs 2,500-2,700 to take on Reliance Jio.
Reliance is offering a handset 4G VoLTE feature phone locked along with a Jio SIM that is effectively free of tariff – a Rs 1,500 security deposit which is to be returned after three years.
On the other hand Mukesh Ambani-led Jio has announced plans to offer Internet-enabled feature phone for a refundable deposit of Rs 1,500, Airtel is placing its bet on a full-fledged smartphone as it believes people would be ready to shell out a little more to get a loaded handset.
Going by the specifications, Airtel’s 4G smartphone is expected to come with a 4-inch display, which seems to be much bigger than JioPhone which comes with 2.4 Inch QVGA display. Airtel’s 4G phone is also expected to come with both front and back cameras and also a solid battery life. JioPhone comes with 2-megapixel primary camera on the rear and a 0.3-megapixel front shooter. It is backed by a 2000mAh removable battery. Airtel’s 4G smartphone is also tipped to come with VoLTE calling feature and 1GB of RAM. This information is revealed by a source close to development of the phone to PTI.
Airtel’s decreased revenue has been attributed to Reliance Jio’s arrival on India’s telecom landscape. Jio had launched its free services in September last year, initially for three months till December 2016. Jio extended the free packs till March 2017 and started charging its customers only from April.
